Former federal prosecutor will help with the investigation into the George Washington Bridge case
The New Jersey Assembly Democrats announced in a January 15, 2014, press release that Reid Schar, a former federal prosecutor, will help with the investigation into the George Washington Bridge case.
Attorney Schar will be working as special counsel for a new investigative committee . The committee will continue the investigation into why three lanes were closed on the George Washington Bridge from September 9, 2013, to September 13, 2013.
State Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald issued a response to Schar's hiring. The New Jersey Assembly Democrats quoted him in the January 15, 2014, press release as saying, “We will move forward with this investigation deliberately and methodically. Mr. Schar’s stellar experience and record of success will add to the great work already undertaken by Chairman Wisniewski and ensure we get the answers the people of New Jersey need and deserve.”
Schar worked for 13 years as an assistant U.S. Attorney in Illinois under U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. Schar successfully prosecuted former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, former Obama campaign fundraiser Tony Rezko, and Muhammad Salah and Abdelhaleem Ashqar.
Blagojevich and Rezko were found guilty of political corruption. Blagojevich is serving a 14 year sentence in prison, and Rezko is serving a 10 year sentence in prison.
Salah and Ashqar were found guilty of obstruction of justice in a case alleging the two were assisting the Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas.
In 2012, Schar left the U.S. Attorney’s office and began working at the Law Firm Jenner and Block. Schar is a Partner at the firm and he is also the co-chair of the firm’s White Collar Defense and Investigations Practice. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his law degree from Northwestern University.
Schar released a statement after being hired to work as special counself for the state Assembly's Investigative Committee. The New Jersey Democrats quoted Schar in the press release as saying, “I am pleased to have been chosen as special counsel to assist the select committee on Investigation in its ongoing work. Jenner and Block understands the importance of this investigation, and we will work diligently to support the members of the investigative committee on this matter.”
During a press conference on January 9, 2014, Governor Chris Christie denied knowing why the lanes’ were closed and said that he wasn’t made aware of the extent of the situation until recently.
Christie told reporters that he fired his deputy chief of staff so suddenly because she “lied” to him. On January 8, 2014, emails between Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, Bridget Ann Kelly, and his friend and Port Authority employee, David Wildstein, were released.
Kelly emailed Wildstein, “Time for some traffic problems,” and Wildstein responded, “Got it.” Christie has hired Randy M. Mastro, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer, to assist him during the investigation.
Mastro is a Partner at the law firm Gibson Dunn. He is also a former assistant U.S. Attorney and the former deputy chief of the Civil Division in the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York. Mastro received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
